Players can now ride through the Rockstar Games prairie online and draw their revolvers without having to play the single-player campaign: Red Dead Online (RDO) has been available as a standalone game since December 2020. This eliminates the need to first acquire the underlying main game, Red Dead Redemption 2, in order to indulge in cowboy life in the Wild West on the game's online multiplayer platform. With attractive deals and plenty of gifts, players were lured to the online game until February 15, which, according to developer Rockstar Games, should already be very popular. With the standalone RDO game, the online cowboy epic gets tons of new updates, activities, and characters.

The multiplayer platform separates from the single-player main game

If being a Lone Ranger in Red Dead Redemption 2 is too lonely for you, you no longer need to go through the single-player campaign to find yourself online with other players in the Wild West and trot through the prairie in the company. On December 2nd, 2020, Rockstar Games released Red Dead Online as a standalone game on Steam, Stadia, Xbox, and PlayStation. As a newcomer, you can now get started directly online. Rockstar announced that in the first month of the standalone game's launch, it added more players and more new players than at any time since the beta started. The multiplayer game drew attention to itself with various events and deals and apparently continues to attract more and more players who want to jump into the cowboy action.

A deeper story and characters for Red Dead Online

Red Dead Online originally came out about a month after Red Dead Redemption 2 was released in November 2018. However, what Rockstar did with its crown jewel Grand Theft Auto 5 was not achieved on the prairie: GTA Online is still linked to the main game GTA 5, but the online universe also offers a gigantic world with impressive updates and DLCs that expand the RDO Riders failed to do so. This should probably change now.

In 2019, Rockstar introduced new characters for Red Dead Online, which should expand and improve the gaming experience. It started with bounty hunters, collectors, and dealers. Now there are two more roles, Moonshiner and Naturalist, that players can use to level up their characters and rank. This takes the role-playing experience to a new level - something that has long been established in GTA Online but has not or hardly been implemented in Red Dead Online. Until now.

More features in Red Dead Redemption 2 online mode

With a variety of characters, players have seemingly endless opportunities to let off steam on the West Elizabeth prairie to their heart's content. Whether you're a gatherer picking flowers from the field or a bounty hunter scoundrel off the streets, players have the choice of what they want to do in-game to while away the time. A true cowboy pastime in the saloons was introduced back in May and is proving very popular with gamblers: poker. You can start the legendary card game in various saloons to let the cards fly at the table. Texas Hold'em is played, today the most popular poker variant in the world. The rules are similar to those of the real game that you know from the casino.

However, if you play at the poker table in the online casino, you play against a croupier and not against other players in-game types such as Ultimate Hold'em. Winnings are also paid out in real money in the online casino with a quick payout, while players in Red Dead Online can only win in-game currency, but no real money. While poker is also present in Red Dead Redemption 2's single-player campaign, only in Red Dead Online is it possible to play against other players and not against the computer. This makes the game even more lifelike.

Although Red Dead Redemption 2 is a terrific box office hit, Red Dead Online never took off like the popular GTA Online. The multiplayer version left a lot to be desired for many players - which is about to change. With Red Dead Online as a standalone game, Rockstar Games is sending a clear signal that they're far from done with the cowboy epic. The online game has already been expanded with numerous updates, new characters, and activities to lure players into the online world of Red Dead Redemption 2. More major updates are expected to justify Red Dead Online as a standalone game.

Will Red Dead Online be able to compete with GTA Online anytime soon? We are excited! Clearly, it seems to be worth it to get the cowboy hit out of the woods again now at the latest.
