The research was directed at measuring pupil dilation as a sign of mental effort. However, the purpose changed when the researchers realized that the pupil had a larger diameter in participants who performed better on memory tasks. The authors stated that the growth of the pupils while the brain "works" can be seen with the naked eye. They concluded that having a larger pupil implies higher than normal intelligence. In people who have them, their ability to reason is more fluid when faced with new experiences. In addition, larger pupil diameter is related to greater concentration and memory.
Despite everything found, the news is not conclusive either.
Researchers believe that having a larger pupil is linked to a brain area called the locus coeruleus. This area influences brain functions such as memory, attention, and learning; all are important in fluid intelligence.
