Sony Xperia Z1 Compact – small smartphone, big
Sony has reduced the display of its flagship Xperia Z1 to 4.3 inches but has almost completely retained the lavish high-end equipment in the Z1 Compact.
With the Xperia Z1, Sony has built one of the best Android smartphones of the past year. The manufacturer is now launching its little brother, the Xperia Z1 Compact. We put the smartphone through its paces for you.
The times when mobile phones became smaller and smaller to save space are long gone. Everywhere you see people with a mixture of smartphones and tablets in their hands, whose display usually measures more than 5 inches, but there are buyers for whom a 4 - 4.3 inch display is completely sufficient. In contrast to its competitors such as Samsung or HTC, Sony has not reduced the performance of the compact version, which means that there is a lot of high-tech in the Z1 Compact.
At first glance, it resembles its big brother, but if you take a closer look, you can see that the back, for example, is made of plastic and not glass. Nevertheless, the phone looks very high quality and, just like the Z1, is waterproof. At 9.5mm, the smartphone is around 1mm thicker than the larger model but has significantly reduced its weight to 137 grams. But that is also due to the battery, which is a bit weaker at 2300 mAh. However, the performance is still above average thanks to the sophisticated energy-saving mode and the smaller display.
The IPS display with its 4.3 inches (10.9 cm) doesn't offer the huge area and the full HD resolution of the Z1, but the 1280 * 720 pixels also look razor-sharp because they are distributed over a smaller area. However, it should be mentioned that users who often watch films or surf on websites with non-mobile optimized pages will not really be happy with this smartphone.
The otherwise very good feeling when using it also results from the high speed of the quad-core processor with 2.2 GHz in combination with 2 GB of RAM, which makes the device really fast. The 16GB data storage is also quite decent, but it can be expanded by up to 64GB with a micro SD card.
When it comes to operation, the user can expect Android version 4.3, and given the powerful hardware, an update to 4.4 shouldn't be a problem.
With its 20.7 megapixels, the camera offers a very high resolution and the photos are correspondingly sharp, but if you use the quite sensible automatic image control, you "only" get 8 megapixels. The colors and the utilization of the light are also on a high level, the quality of the photos only decreases significantly when there is little outside light. However, there is an (almost too bright) LED flash that is too visible in pictures.
The rest of the equipment, from LTE to the NFC chip, has everything on board that the big brother also has.
It is currently available in white, black, green, and pink.
